Training in attachment issues
Understanding the needs of vulnerable young people
Attachment is defined as the tie of affection which forms between the child and his/her own main carer.
Research (Bowlby, Ainsworth and others) identified links between the quality of parental care and the social, emotional and cognitive development of infants. Ongoing research shows that early insecure attachments can negatively affect future relationships- including those with school staff.
Who is the training aimed at?
All those working with vulnerable young people, including school, college and residential care staff.
What does the training cover?
Outlines the origins of Attachment Theory and offers valuable insights into the ways in which unsatisfactory early care relationships affect the social, emotional, behavioural and educational development of children.
Attention is focussed on those classroom management approaches which are found to be most effective in supporting children and young people with specific attachment difficulties.
A whole school 'Positive Discipline' approach is outlined- offering strategies which promote mutual respect, cooperation and responsibility in the classroom.
What are the benefits?
Attachment Theory training gives a real insight into the issues that vulnerable young people bring to the school setting.
As attachment difficulties can affect many young people, including those who have experienced significant loss or change in their lives, and those whose early care was inconsistent and/or neglectful, it can have an enormous effect on classroom management.
Understanding the theory and research, and being shown practical ways of dealing with the issues, will have a positive impact on those adults who are responsible for the care and education of vulnerable young people.
